Cantina The Drunk Side - Dreshdae Cantina version 3.0

Mathias entered the cantina, looking around. He was exhausted. He had spent the last year and a half either on Corellia, or the space around Corellia doing patrols. This was the first time he had been in the Dreshdae Cantina. "Hail, Empress!" He said, kneeling, before standing up. He looked around, before walking up to the bar and ordering a water. He wanted to quench his thirst, and water would do the trick.

IC: Terec Ansaroth

Captain Ansaroth was not normally fond of cantinas. He preferred the peace and solitude of his private quarters on board his ship. But as his duties had led him to Korriban for a short time, he had decided, uncharacteristically, to spend some time in the cantina as he was off duty for a time. Despite this, he was still wearing his Navy uniform, as he did not intend to drink whilst he was here. He merely wished to relax.

However, upon entering, he noticed that this particular establishment currently was being given patronage by several extremely important Sith, as well as the Empress herself! He had half an urge to immediately leave, but decided that to turn around and seemingly flee would cowardly, and unbefitting of a naval officer. So, instead, he knelt and bowed his head to the floor.
“Hail to the Empress!”
After speaking, he stood back up and took a seat in a mostly empty corner of the cantina, and, unable to sit still, he took out his datapad and read through the reports that his first officer had sent him regarding his vessels performance whilst he had been here on Korriban.

Seeing Captain Ansaroth enter the cantina, Mathias immediately stood up, at attention, and raised a salute. “Captain.” Mathias said, holding his salute until the salute was returned. It seemed his water would have to wait.

Seeing the lower ranking officer saluting him, Ansaroth returned the salute, and beckoned the officer over to where he had sat down.

He took note of his rank badge, which identified the young man as a Lt. Commander, a high rank for someone who, judging by his youthful appearance, must not be long out of the Academy. Either the man was a promising officer fast tracked by High Command, or had friends in high places who had secured him an early promotion.

“I hope, Lieutenant Commander, that, like me, you are off duty.”

Mathias lowered his salute, and upon seeing the superior beckoning him over, he picked up his water and moved over to meet him. Then, as he sat down, he heard the Captain ask the question.

“I wouldn’t be here if I weren’t, Sir.” Mathias answered, taking a sip of water.

“Good, I’d hate to have to do any unnecessary paperwork whilst I was here.”

Ansaroth gave the junior officer an appraising look. Normally he did not fraternise with those of lower rank, he preferred to remain ‘above’ his crew, in order to maintain a level of respect. The only officer on board the Imperator he socialised with was his first officer, and even then he did so sparingly. He had friends, of course, but they were mostly his old academy classmates and those who he had served with previously. But, seeing as this man was not under his direct command, he decided to relax his usual restraint.

“So, what brings you to Korriban, Lt. Commander? Has your ship docked here, or are you stationed here?”

"I have docked my ship here. I found myself with a free schedule after my chain of command permitted me and my crew leave." Mathias answered, "First leave since being assigned."

Mathias took another sip of his water as he felt the superiors' gaze judging him, and it didn't make him too terribly nervous. Under normal circumstances, say, not in uniform, it would have made him very nervous. For whatever reason, he found his social ineptitude disappeared whenever he put on the Imperial Uniform.

"Why do you ask, Sir?" He inquired.

Terec was slightly surprised. Normally a look of appraisal from himself at least made a junior officer stutter once when replying to any question. Perhaps this man was an exceptional graduate fast-tracked to a command position.
“No particular reason other my own curiosity, Lt. Commander. So, what ship are you assigned to? Who is your Captain?”

"I am assigned to the light cruiser, the Pride of Dantooine. A joke.... she is more than 150 years old. She is from the Clone Wars apparently....." Mathias answered as he sipped his water yet again, "And as for the captain of my ship... it's me. Though it is a position I did not yet want. She isn't even that impressive. She is just a patrol vessel."

“Hmm...a Lt. Commander in charge of his own ship? Interesting...”
Terec thought over this rather strange situation. It wasn’t like high command to give ships to anyone less than a Captain. But, if this ‘Pride of Dantooine’ was 150 years old, then it was hardly a posting to brag about. So why had they promoted this young officer to be given an old rust bucket to command? Ah, of course. This officer must have had connections, perhaps a family member who pushed hard for a promotion and a command. And of course, High Command had obliged, by giving the poor boy a terrible posting that was essentially a dead end.

“I’m going to make a hypothesis, tell me if I’m correct. You have a wealthy parent with connections to the navy, perhaps they themselves are an officer or they work in the government or for a corporation, who pulled a few favours to push High Command to advance you quickly up the ranks, likely without you being aware. High Command was forced to do so, but they had the final word by effectively posting you to a dead end assignment. Am I correct?”

"You would be correct, Sir." Mathias said, "My father... a baron-wannabe of the ship building world. He owns a rather sizable company, which provides resources to shipyards to produce their ships. My father did his....thing.... and a year and a half later, I'm stuck protecting Corellia from... well, essentially nothing. No one is dumb enough to attack Corellia."

“I’ve seen it happen before. Of course, those of us who come from the correct background are suited to command positions. But High Command is not as...flexible...with promotions as it once was. I expressly forbade my father from interfering with my career in any way. Of course, he had no plans to. Always told me that I had to earn my commission. All he did was put in a good word with the Academy admissions board.”

"If only my father were as understanding, Sir." Mathias told his superior.

“Parents often go too far when it comes to their children. Tell me, what did you study most in the Academy?Do you truly feel that you are ready for a command position?”

Terec gave the man another appraising look. The officer had piqued his interest, and he now found himself wanting to test out this officer’s capabilities, to see if perhaps he was being wasted in his current role, or was better left to it.

"I excelled in battlefield strategies and tactics." Mathias said, "and studied numerous designs for starships. Mainly, it was battlefield warfare."

Matyr found the cantina with ease having a thirst. It was spacious and elegantly decorated in Sith fashion creating an ambiance that, when combined with the low volume music, produced a subtle change of pace from the outside world. He found his eyes drifting to the ceiling and every other inch of the room soaking in the atmosphere and architecture.

Eyeing the bar he saw a pair he didn't yet know. Walking over as he continued to admire the room Matyr took up a seat near them. "What're we having gentleman?"

Terec raised an eyebrow upon hearing the term ‘battlefield strategies’. That sounded to his ear more like an Army term than a Navy one. But perhaps the officer was simply mistaken. So he decided to ask him a basic question.

“So, you could describe to me how you would execute a Marg Sabl manoeuvre then Lt. Commander, correct?”

Terec noticed the stranger arrive and sit near them. As he asked them his question, Terec responded.

“I’m not partaking this evening. We are merely having a polite discussion about naval tactics.”

"The Marg Sabl maneuver is when a vessel turns its hangar bays away from the enemy, in order to launch its fighter complement unseen." Mathias explained. "The fighters then form up within the ships shadow and accelerate to attack speeds. The purpose of turning the ships hangars away from the enemy, is to draw the enemy in. Unbeknownst to them, the fighters that have deployed, formed up, and accelerated to attack speed, then fly around the ship from which they launched at all angles, in order to completely surround the attacking ship and engage to defeat."

Terec nodded approvingly. This officer clearly had paid attention during his classes. Why, Terec had once met an Admiral who had no idea what a Marg Sabl was.

“Very good. One variation on it is to manoeuvre at full speed directly towards the enemy then perform the turn at the last second and launching fighters. Riskier, but it gives them less time to react to the fighters. The Marg Sabl is ineffective at long range, as the enemy will have time to prepare their defences to your fighters and properly target them. If the Marg Sabl is performed effectively, the enemy will have no time to engage a point defence system or redirect their own fighters. Why, Grand Admiral Thrawn once destroyed an entire New Republic attack squadron with just one Imperial-II Class Star Destroyer using the manoeuvre. You say you design ships? What kind of designs are you working on?”

"I am working on a simple replacement for the so-called "Pride of Dantooine." Mathias said, "Though I do like the design of the hull. It will be a cruiser, hopefully. I have no desire to be near a Star Destroyer as of yet, but as for design aspects, I enjoy the pronged bow designs. I am also a fan of the Lucrehulk battleships used by the Trade Federation and the CIS."
