Task 2: A Mast(er) from the Past

Kalum. Our history is what defines us. It teaches and guides us. It makes us what we are. It can also teach us lessons in what we should avoid. Choices we shouldn't make.

For this task, I want you to pick a Jedi Master from our history and examine a mistake that master made that drastically changed the Order. Analyze what may have caused that choice, and explain how you think we should best proceed in order to not repeat such a folly.

This task shouldn't need be too long. No less than 500 words, but no more than 1000. Your points will, as always, be measured by the amount of enthusiasm you pour into your response.

TASK RESPONSE:

The Jedi Master I have chosen is Master Atris, and her choice to use a secret Conclave on Katarr to attempt to draw out the perpetrator of the ongoing First Jedi Purge, which resulted in both the deaths of over 100 of the remaining Jedi, including many of the Jedi Council masters, and the virtual disappearance of the Order from the Galaxy for several years after. Because of her decision, the Order’s leadership in a time of crisis was crippled, and many Jedi needlessly died, as well as the innocent people of Katarr.

To understand why Atris did what she did, we need to understand the time period she lived in. The Jedi Order was going through a period of intense crisis instigated by the Mandalorian Wars, which split the Jedi into two factions; those who remained loyal to the Jedi Council and its decision not to intervene in the conflict, and those who followed Revan to fight in the war and help the Republic. In the aftermath of the war’s end, the Jedi who followed Revan followed him to the Dark Side, and formed a new Sith Empire led by the now Darth Revan and later his apprentice Darth Malak. The Jedi Civil War, as it came to be known, ended in Jedi victory but at a devastating cost. The Order was crippled by years of war, and in the aftermath, a new enemy emerged, hunting down the remaining Jedi from the shadows. Atris called a secret meeting of the remaining Jedi, now numbering only around 100, to take place on Katarr. The official purpose of the meeting was to discuss how best to combat the emerging threat and how to safeguard the future of the order. But Atris secretly leaked the location of the meeting, and Darth Nihilus, the Lord of Hunger, devoured the entire planet, killing everyone except one Miraluka woman, who he spared for unknown reasons. The Jedi Order practically ceased to exist as an active institution, with the few remaining Masters going into hiding across the Galaxy, and Republic citizens assuming that the Order was extinct.

Perhaps Atris, conflicted about the attitude of the council towards the Mandalorians which then led to the split within the Order and the rise of Darth Revan and Darth Malak, decided that it would be best to face the threat directly, to lure it out and confront it in strength. This was the opposite of the actions taken against the Mandalorians. Perhaps, in her own way, she had learned a lesson from the previous wars. But in doing this, and in a way thinking like Revan and acting proactively, she made a grave error. Much like the Jedi Council during the Mandalorian Wars, Atris did not truly understand the nature of the true enemy, but unlike the council, she acted rashly and used her fellow Jedi as pawns, ironically acting much like Revan himself. But in doing so, she doomed her fellow Jedi and an entire world to death.

She learned the wrong lesson. And others paid the price.

As Jedi, we are always taught to think our actions through carefully, and not to take needless risks that could harm others. We must be mindful and careful, always weighing each action we take before diving into the fray. Atris, however, acted rashly without consulting her fellow Jedi, and acted arrogantly, believing that she could defeat whatever enemy emerged.

To avoid making the same mistake as Atris did- to act rashly without properly assessing the threat and putting others in danger by doing so, and by doing so nearly destroying the Jedi Order- we must strive to always properly plan out our actions, and act only when we understand all the potential factors involved. We should also work together, rather than alone, and never put others in unknowing danger to further our own ends. We must also act from a state of calm, and not let doubt, fear and arrogance cloud our judgement and lead to unnecessary risks or rash actions. This state of mind led Atris to make a decision that she thought was right but in reality was an extremely dangerous move that led to the practical collapse of the Jedi Order for several years as well as the unnecessary deaths of an entire Miraluka colony.

An excellent reply, and a fantastic choice of topic. I couldn't agree more with your assessment. Five points awarded.
